The crocheted placemat curls up because of the nature of the stitches used in crocheting. The natural tendency of the yarn to twist and the tension of the stitches cause the edges of the placemat to curl inwards. This is a common characteristic of crochet projects and can be minimized by using different stitch patterns or blocking the finished piece. **

For gray plates, a white placemat would be a good choice as it will create a nice contrast and make the gray plates stand out. Alternatively, a light gray or silver placemat could complement the plates and create a cohesive look. Avoid using a dark or bold colored placemat as it may clash with the gray plates and overwhelm the overall table setting. **

Ideally, there should be about 1-2 inches of distance from the edge of the table for the placemat. This allows for the placemat to sit comfortably on the table without hanging over the edge. It also helps prevent the placemat from getting in the way when setting the table or using utensils. Ultimately, the distance can vary depending on personal preference and the size of the placemat. **
